"Thats a really scary looking knife" Whats the world coming to?

I was at work today (grocery store) and there was a box that needed opening. So I pulled out my Benchmade Pika Tanto and cut it open. Just the a customer walked by and took offense to that. She walked over to me and said "Thats a really scary looking knife." I said "Uhh sorry" and put it back in my pocket. She asked "Is it for fishing or something?" I said no, its just a pocket knife. She walked away without another word.

    Uhhh ok?

You monster! It is nice and sleek looking. Much less aggressive looking than mine. I'd suggest using a boxcutter for those kinds of jobs. Especially if they supply it, so you don't dull yours. There can be big stinks made out of these kinds of things.

A 3.5" blade is scary? Must have been because it's black all over. Perhaps you should invest in the pink handled Benchmade posted in another thread here (that I can't currently pull to the front of my brain).

Or you chould have done your best Crocodile Dundee impression and pulled out a big knife from your other pocket.

The answer to those types of questions usually goes like this "Oh, I didn't tell you?, must be none of your business""Does it make you nervous?, you must be a liberal"

While not the best idea (doesn't fit with the whole "gray man" thing), I have to admit that there have been a couple of times when my response to the above question ("is that for fishing/hunting, etc.?") was: "nope, it's for killin' people" (said with the appropriate wide-eyed psycho grin)

they usually don't hang around after that.

I really do prefer not to stand out though, so I usually use a little SAK for routine cutting chores in public.

I have been fishing my whole life and never have been able to catch a fish with a knife.

    Uh, not okay.

I also carry a "pocket" knife. It's 3" long, it's sharp, it's got black sides (Spyderco Native). Fearful folk may well have an emotional reaction for no reason, but that itself is no reason to fail to get my task completed.

There is really no reason to respond with apologies, because no offense was given, nothing offensive was done, and no threat was produced. (The fact that someone acts offended isn't sufficient.) IMO, saying in disbelief "It's a pocket knife" is all that's needed, but that's just me.

I have often replied to that question with "It's for opening boxes and muggers" and that usually ends the conversation and I go go back to my life.

You should really use a box cutter. Send that ugly black knife to me, and I will send you a brand new shiney box cutter so you can be politically correct!

But ... but ... b ... a box cutter means you're an airplane hijacker. Didn't you get the memo?
