Need info on OC spray
OK, first off, I don't know what OC means. I know that it refers to defensive spray (pepper spray or mace). Could someone point me to a post about the differences between pepper spray, mace and tear gas OC etc.
I need to get something for my Fiance. She works late shift at a hospital and sometimes is the only one leaving the building at midnight.
The other day a crazy guy threatened her inside the hospital. Secuirty "Escorted" him about 4 blocks away but when she left work she could hear him somewhere in the parking lot mumbling to himself.
I am looking for something legal in Michigan that she can carry in her hand to the car. Perfer something that would not be difficult to use, with low probablity of gassing herself, something with a safety trigger to make sure it's pointed the right way.

OC is the acronym for "Oleoresin Capsicum." It is made with the active ingredient of peppers, capsicum. OC is designed to irritate the eyes and mucous membranes to include the nasal passages.
CN (or Mace) and CS are other and older tear gas agents that were also designed to attack the mucous membranes.
I imagine that the term "tear" gas comes from the fact that you get a shot in the face, you'll start tearing.
I don't know what's legal in Michigan; you'll have to do some research.
Cross-contamination is a drawback of any non-lethal spray whether OC, CN, or CS; you spray/gas someone with it, there is a good chance you'll get a face full or may be even a whiff of the stuff. That's especially true outdoors in windy conditions or in a confined space.
Realize too that many people can fight through any of those agents.

Mace CN gas, or chloroacetophenone
A lachrymatory agent or lachrymator (commonly referred to as tear gas) is a chemical agent that stimulates the corneal nerves in the eyes to cause tearing, pain, and even temporary blindness. Common lachrymators include CS (tear gas), CN and OC.
Pepper spray (also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum"), uses the oily resin from HOT PEPPERS.
CN or Mace is the more tightly controlled of the above TEAR GASES

Fox Labs OC spray is regarded as some of the best out there, it is also some of the most potent at 5.3 million SHUs. I have a can myself.
Note that anything is going to blow back at least a little, more likely quite a bit. You can use a stream (as opposed to cone) for this, as it helps reduce the blowback a bit. However it needs to be aimed a little more precisely than the cone.
At least here in Florida, it is okay to carry OC spray for defensive purposes so long as it is not more than 2 oz (don't ask for the logic behind it, but that is the law, so...). So I carry a 2 oz can of Fox Labs spray, but the cone instead of the stream. What can I say, I bought it before I read abotu the cone vs. stream thing. Oh well.
Haven't had to use it yet (luckily) so I can't comment on it.
Oh and make sure to get the flip top, otherwise you get the "cop top" which is just an exposed button up top - which isn't good if you want to avoid accidental release.

My wife wont carry a gun so I bought her bear spray (see link). We have used this product on a bear encounter while camping and it works very well, the bear flew out of camp like he was on fire. I figure that if it will deter a bear, it ought to help her to defend against a human.

I saw my wife use Mace 20 + years ago on a BIG angry man who was choking me; he went down like if he had been hit by a train ... fascinating.

Do they still sell Fox labs products? I don't see them listed. But they do have DPS sprays, which I believe are supposed to be even hotter... no?

Search out...DPS OC spray.
Suggestion...get the jet stream spray.
Another suggestion...buy two of whatever you do get and practice with it in the wind. You're going to get some in your face, just like real life...can you still function?
Using a practice spray will tell you exactly how far you can reach, and how effectively it works, etc.

I'm a huge fan of OC. I got sprayed as part of the requirements to be allowed to use it (go navy) and the stuff hurts like hell. It affected me strongly enough that if a cop ever threatens me with it I will immediately drop to the ground, curl into the fetal position and start preemptively crying.
However, not everyone is affected like this. I was in a class of about 28 and there were 3 or 4 who felt a "slight burning" and were unaffected. until they dipped their head in a bucket of water. So like anything else its not foolproof.
As a secondary recommendation, a lot of companies sell doubles of their canisters in an inert form. Exact same form factor so you can practice without using the stuff that burns.

What spray pattern do you prefer? stream, foam?
currently i only have stream, and cone( or fog, i have a hard time distinguising between these two)
I'm thinking about buying a foam type. i know there is a gel type as well, but its not available where i live.

There are several related videos of people getting OC'ed... it looks very effective.
But don't watch at work... apparently, no one is capable of being sprayed and NOT dropping F-bombs... LOL
