    Honing Oil

Did I miss a meeting on this???

I can't find honing oil locally in any of the stores. What they all have is non-petroleum honing solution. This might be the next best thing since sliced bread. However I have been using oil on my stones for many years and they are impregnated. The solution just rolls right off.

I know that there is nothing magical about honing oil and that light oil will suffice.

Can you guys recommend oil I can get at the hardware store???

    Thanks!
    Chris

Historically Sperm Whale Oil is the finest honing oil and nothing really compares to it.
    Just FYI.
It's near 'bout impossible to find any vintage stock though.

The two oils closest to Sperm Oil and much more readily available would be JoJoBa Oil & Meadowfoam Oil but, I have no idea how they would work out as honing oils.

another vote for mineral oil. if you don't like the smell, add something to it. i add clove oil to mine sometimes; it makes it smell like choji oil.

Save your money and use mineral oil. Works great.

I have used vegetable oil before as cheap alternative, and seems to work just fine.

    odorless mineral spirits

If you do not like smell of mineral spirits, get a can of orderless mineral spirits found at most hardware stores. You can pick up a can for a couple bucks, it works well on oil stones.
