I get the chance to go on a trip to Spain this summer
and was wondering if anyone knew what the knife laws were like there.
Ive found several different answers by simply googling it and want to make sure I get the right answer and am legal.
Thanks

I've never been to Spain, and based upon what that country is trying to do to the 'Bush six' and our good name as a country...I hope tourism to Spain falls to 'zero'...![]()

Been there plenty of times. Last two were summer of '05 and '06.
Believe the laws for carry were either 2.5 or 3" blade.
I'd say basically you want to avoid dark streets or deserted areas at night. Just keep you guard up and eyes open. You really don't want to get yourself into the position of having to use a knife for self defense. That doesn't mean you can't defend youself if need be. The authorities will not be as 'understanding' as they are in Texas.
I've never had a problem but I do stay aware. It's a great place and I enjoy going there. We'd like to make it back again either this summer or Xmas/New Years this year.
Make sure you've got copies of your docs and are aware of the locations of the US Embassies and Consulates or at least how to contact them. When my daughter went there last summer I made sure she had copies of docs with her and here also in case originals were lost.
What part are you going to visit? Do you know any spanish?

Spain is a cool place to see. If you do use Spanish make sure it is Spain Spanish, they don't take kindly to Central or South American Spanish!( Not too fond of Latins as they call them.) Almost worse then speaking English, lol!
there is something of a knife culture in Spain. It is the macho thing to do. however, as a foreigner in their country, the only thing that I would be brave enough to carry is non-tactical appearing knife... swiss army, opinel'(french brand), or maybe a multitool with a good knife. forget about the folders dude. The Spanish cops have a reputation of dissing out a beating first and asking questions later. During our deployment to the med, there was a story circulating of this recon Marine being stuck in a Spanish Jail after stabbing a local while defending himself. Now I could not really verify if this is true. however, odds are probably against you if you have to use that knife defensively.
I don't really now the exact knife laws there but when I was traveling there my basic self defense plan was to run like hell. good luck and have fun traveling in Spain... it is a great country.

+1 on Toledo!! I was in Spain during the summer of 04 and really liked it! I don't know the laws on knifes but if you can I would make a trip to Toledo! When I was there I bought a really nice hand carved master quality sword! It was expensive(350euros) but it is sweet!! hope you enjoy your trip!

I visited Madrid and Santiago de Compestela when my daughter studied at the University.
Met a lot of anti-Americans.
The only English speaking Spaniards I met worked in the hotels. In restaraunts, your SOL.
I'd forget the knife. Just be smart and stay away from dark alleys.

Not sure about the knife laws, but don't miss Toledo, The Alhambra, the Gaudi architecture in Barcelona, if possible.

Do you have an idea on where is Spain you will be visiting yet?
We're still hoping to make it back to Andalucia this summer. I love southern Spain, especially Sevilla. Haven't made it to Barcelona or Valencia yet, but I will.
You will find no finer ham in the world than 'Jamon Serrano'. As far as Spanish Sherry ....I recommend 'Tio Pepe Fino' (dry) or 'Alfonso Oloroso Seco' (semi-dry).![]()
As far as Madrid,It's a beautiful city. Leftist and socialist tendencies though. That's where 'P.M. Zapatero' (or as I call him, 'Zaphabichuela', since he reminds me so much of Mr. Bean) gets most of his support.
Wherever you are, try to dress to blend in rather than stand out. And enjoy yourself.

From what I've read in some Spanish forums, the blade can't be longer than 11 cm (approx. 4 inches). Oh, and I was in Spain (Madrid and Toledo) in 2002. Beautiful cities...great memories.
