S&W Extreme Ops fixed blade tanto

Hello, as you can tell I'm new here. I was wondering how durable this particular knife is. I own one but haven't been able to take it out and test it yet...so far the knife seems very durable but I wonder how the edge will hold? Anyone here own one of these? I know there are better ones out there but my budget is tight.

I am a gun nut and, as such, have purchased a number of Smith and Wesson guns to which a bonus of a Smith and Wesson knife was attached. While I have never purchased a S&W knife directly I have become familiar with them in this way.

My opinion is that they are, as a rule, a very average performer. I would not criticize them for this but, for the money, one could do much better. For instance knives from Kershaw, CRKT, Gerber to name just a few are, in my opinion, better products for much the same money as S&W.

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking into CRKT and Ka Bar, but the S&W caught my eye the most...I hear the heat treat is crap though. So far I have honed up the edge with a accusharp and a leather strop with white jewlers rouge and got the edge close to shaving sharp...I did manage to take it out for a "test drive" today and the edge so far has held up, even after I threw it into a tree and my deck. The g10 handle seems really tough also. I might go for a Ka Bar next...

In my limited experience, the edge is horrible. CRKT, Ka-Bar, Cold Steel, etc. make better knives for a little more money.

I have 3 ka-bars and love em all. Very good quality knives for a good price.

Gee, that hardly looks like a Strider at all. S&W should stick to making revolvers.- George

    Smith knives

You get what you pay for. I'm sure they have a vendor that makes them for Smith. They Make firearms very well. I own a knife with the Smith brand name in it.
Nothing special. I would not use it to be an every day carry.
I am very partial to SOG knives. Very durable.

I have owned a few S&W knives and have been disappointed with their edge holding ability. If you are not worried about having to sharpen often, the knife will hold up well. I put a folder through hell in Afghanistan and Iraq. One of the best multipurpose tools I have found.

I have a couple S&W knives and "average" is a good description. You can find their folders new on flea-bay for under $20.00 and a few for even less. I wouldn't want to get poked by one though!
