non-firearm carry in New Orleans
hope this is the right forum. i'm a youth pastor who will be taking my kids to New Orleans in the next month. because i'm taking my kids, it would not work for me to take my usual carry gun. however, i'd like to carry something (knife, expandable baton, spray, most anything really). we've had incidents of pan handlers and hustlers giving kids problems in the past and i'd like to be prepared in case (God please forbid) something should happen. Does anyone know what i can and cannot carry in NO? Ive tried to read the statutes, but they're absurdly vague.
any help will be appreciated. thanks:)

rirejax,
I'm a preachers kid myself
I would go with some Fox Labs pepper spray.
There are a lot of laws against batons..not sure
about down there in New Orleans.

Intentionally so. Incredibly crooked state.
My best suggestion woud be a few 3-4" screwdrivers with pocket clips- the kind our granddads used to have all the time. Clip one between the buttons of your shirt midline, another in your back pocket. I think either Phillips or slotted will work to rectify a case of screwhead.
Edit to add: I know it sounds cool & all, but NO was a dung-pit before the hurricane, and wasn't improved with a washout. Wouldn't they rather go to Corpus...?

Thanks for the responses; i might combine and go with a pepper spray primary and screwdrivers if things get really serious. had considered the improvised weapon category (too used to Indiana's lax weapon control laws:))
regarding their selection of NO; i'm not a fan of the idea either. not only for security reasons but because they've had the last two conventions in atlanta and san antonio, and I'd like to go somewhere where i wont sweat continuously for the duration of the visit.

Wow. One of the worst confluences of coastal gangs followed by the Mexican cartels' nexus, followed by a place where more than a few exit the southbound end of a northbound gator. See if they'd like to try the West Bank next year...
