    Knife carry in NC?

I'll be driving up to NC up the coast from Miami and spending the week in NC. What are the laws on knife carry in these states considering I have a Fl CCP?

I believe in NC a firearm is the only thing you can conceal. Knives dont fall in that category. Have a safe trip.

This is correct. In NC it's a CHP, concealed handgun permit. It covers no other weapons, only handguns.

The only place the law addresses other than the "normal small folding knife ment to be carried in a pocket" is where they reference carrying a weapon on to educational property and there they expand it to and knife, dirk, photon torpedo, etc.

As is the case with other NC laws, (or lack thereof) carry of a sheath knife may be a grey area since it is somewhat concealed in a sheath but Id guess that as long as your not doing the Crocodile Dundee carry you'll be fine with the average sized fixed blade openly carried. Do NOT cover it or you will be open to concealed weapons charges.

BTW I'm no knife expert nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so don't bet the farm on internet advise.

They were very specific in my NC CHL class that the permit only covers the handgun(s) - not a knife. However, I see lots and lots of folks with folders clipped to their pocket around Wake County. I carry a Spyderco Delica 4 with the "wave" opener clipped on my pocket. The blade is 2.94" - under the 3" maximum that certain juristictions prohibit.

I plan on using the small size as my defense. I whipped it out at the Verizon store in town to open one of those blister pack accessories, and the clerk said something about a weapon and laughed. I told him it was just my pocket knife, and he was seeing me use it for its primary purpose.

"If it has a clip it has to be carried in a way that it is visible." direct quote from a LEO friend of mine. If there is a pocket clip you can clip it to the inside of the pocket with the end sticking out and be legal according to him. Just don't let you shirt untuck and cover up the little bit that is showing.
