Well, of course this has been discussed many times here but you cannot go wrong with a Remington 870 Express or Mossberg 500/590.

Spend that extra $700 on a handgun, training, weapon light or a he||uva of a lot of ammo.
I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.

How a firearm "fits" a person is very subjective. If you're partial to a given gun, and if it's known to be reliable and functional for your purposes, then it should be a good choice.

Given my criteria and what feels "right" to me, I opted for a Remington 870 Police 12ga shotgun, 14" bbl.

Being a lefty, probably the Mossberg 590A1 with tang safety would be a good choice as well, but I am reasonably comfortable with the 870 and how it functions.

I'm a fan of the Remington 870 but just about any pump shotgun with a 18-20" smooth bore barrel will do just fine.

Remington 870 w/18" barrel and extended magazine tube and with the left over money from the original $1k you can buy lots and lots of ammo for practice plus a good light and some other goodies to boot!

Anyone try one of those Charles Daily's that CDNN has on sale?

I read the basics, ie where made etc., but have yet to hear of anyone owning one.

They are less expensive than all the regular standard pumps.

If you do a search on shotguns here on DC, you'll get a ton of info on all makes and models. Its good stuff.

    With a budget of $1k, you'll have a rock'n HD shotgun.

Ammo note: If you use birdshot when target shooting you can spend more time with your shotgun. Kind of like using .38 special in a .357 mag. Plus it's cheaper to buy.

The best shotgun for home defense is whichever one you get to first. The best load is whatever is in it. Keep all my stuff loaded to the brim ready to go. Always remember nearly 100% of home invasions happen at home ....with no appointment.

Remington 870, Express Synthetic, 18" bl . . . simplicity in operation, takedown, cleaning etc. Great quality and reliability at around $300.00 how can you go wrong.

Yep, I agree. For a $1000 you should be able to pick up a home defense shot gun plus a nice pistol or revolver. You get that "one two" punch that is hard to beat.
