That also places them closer to where you will need them.

Not so much concerned about shooting lefty, but actually interference in a standard right handed situation because the shells sit so high if I don't fully press the brass down into the holder.

Good deal. My Mossberg 500 is set up very similar to yours. That is an ATI collapsible stock, which costs about 60-90$ depending on where you get it. The side saddle is about 30$, and brand new that mossberg is not less than $300. I think you made out well.

I have my side saddle mounted on the left side of the receiver, as opposed to mounting it on the stock. I find this makes for a faster acquisition of ammo as you load into the magazine tube.

As far as how to load your shells into the side saddle, well perhaps this is preference, but from all the research I've done, you have your shells loaded backwards. You keep the shells loaded brass down, not on top. This way you can just pull from the bottom and load directly into the mag tube. When you have your brass on top, you're making alot of unecessary motions to spin the shell around so you can load it. When you keep the shells loaded brass on the bottom, you pull it out and it's ready to be shoved right in. Try practicing this, (keep the safety on :P), and see which is faster. You will undoubtedly find that keeping your shells loaded brass down is much, much faster.

It's the same concept of keeping your handgun mags, "bullets forward" while in the mag holster. That way, once you grab the magazine, all you have to do is pull it out and bring it top side, then slam it into the gun. If you are bullets backwards, you have to pull the mag out, spin it around so it is facing bullets forward, then slam it into the gun.

You need to find the most efficient way to carry your secondary ammunition sources. Those brief moments may save your life.

Better not use buckshot in that weapon or you might cause our sun to go supernova if you use it for HD.

Took the Mossy out into the yard this afternoon and put 15 rds of Remington 00 buck down the pipe. Patterned about the size of a pie plate at 15 yds. Recoil was very manageable despite the light weight. The action was glassy smooth and the function was flawless. VERY pleased!

Nice, that is the exact same Mossberg I'm building for HD right now.
Nice to hear the recoil is manageable. I wanted the adjustable stock so the wifey can shoot it when I'm not home.
My arms are longer than hers. I can fire it with the pistol grip but she'll have to rally lean into the butt plate to keep standing after firing.

Wow, I should keep an eye on the local Pawn Shops a little more often.

The rubber butt pad helps the recoil a lot. You still get a wallop, but it is cushioned.
