    Franchi SPAS-15 / SPAS-12

Searched the forum, and don't see much chat on the Franchi SPAS-15 / SPAS-12. The SPAS-12 does not look much different than other tactical style shotguns, and the SPAS-15 looks like an AR version of the AK Saiga.

That sums up what I know (other then what you can find on wiki).

Why are they illegal in the US (is it real just how they look)?

    What makes them special?

Have you ever shot one, if so, how was it?

I never shot a SPAS 12 but I've handled one and it is on the heavy side. I know if I wanted a pump/semi-auto shotgun I'd opt for the Benelli M3.

They have a large "coolness" factor that may never wear off, but they are heavy.

The SPAS-12 is "special" because it can shoot in both modes, either semi- or pump-action.

I think its the "fear factor"of the SPAS-12...

I have a Benelli M3 Super 90 that shoot in both pump and semi-auto mode...and it's not illegal...

    I've shot a SPAS 12. Loved it.

Like previously stated they are heavy. But that was nice because it really helped take up some of the recoil. The option to switch from semi to pump is cool, but of limited value.

Neither is the Spas... You just can't import them anymore, but yes, given the choice after having used a SPAS in the past, I'd take a newer Benelli. That spas12 was a heavy beast and since the ban on new ones plus being EOL/no longer made it's darn tough to find replacement parts for parts that routinely wear out, like the recoil buffers(assuming you actually use it and it's not a safe queen)

I used to own one and sold it due to financial problems. it was a mistake. they are great shotguns. mild recoil, can actually be shot one handed. wish i still had it.
