Need a little help with an M4 upper
I had made a thread earlier about getting a EO-Tech scope for my M4. The problem is that I have a fixed handle on my upper. I had looked at attachments so I could mount the scope on the handle, or even on the forward grip, but it looked tacky. Someone suggested getting a new upper... but I really don't need all that, nor do I want to spend $400 to buy the exact same thing I already have, just with a flat top. I already have the barrel, the bolt, bolt carrier etc... all I really need is a stripped upper housing with the flat top.
Then I found this on Brownells.
It looks promising. It seems all I'd have to do is swap out my current barrel, bolt and bolt carrier, then pop it on my lower and I am all set. One thing I have learned about guns though, is if it seems easy, it probably isn't.
Is there anything in that above scenario that could go wrong before I commit and buy this stripped upper?

If everything is Milspec, it ought to be good to go.
Not hard to do really as long as you have the right tools.

You will need to install the bolt forward assist in that upper receiver besides the barrel bolt assembly and charging handle.
JSE surplus has a flat top stripped upper for $75.00,thats almost $50.00 cheaper

Buy a complete upper for less here.

Or, just get a drop-in front rail handguard, and cowitness your EO.
ETA--you may want to check and see if your receiver/barrel extension has M4 feedramps...if so, there's another complete lower at BCM that has M4 cuts.

BCM uppers are great. I'll throw another option into the mix, just for grins.

Whoever you go through, I'd recommend getting an assembled upper. Not that it's a ton of work to assemble an upper, but it's nice to know you don't have to mess with it, and the cost difference is almost nothing.
Here's the only gotcha: Make sure you know whether your barrel extension has M4 feed ramps or not and get the upper to match. If you mis-match the barrel extension and upper, it can make it almost impossible for the gun to feed correctly.
Here's a picture to help you identify which you have: http://www.ar15barrels.com/tech/feedramps2.jpg
As far as installation, you'll need a good armorer's wrench, a vice, and a vice block. The vice and vice block aren't technically 100% necessary, but it will make the job far easier.

Instructions are all over the internet. Here's a decent one:

Is this hard to understand? Then why does it get unintelligible to some people when 5 little words are changed?
