I see lots of "AR-15 type" weapons that shoot 9mm and .40, but the few that I see that shoot .45 only can hold 8 bullets at a time. Is that due to the weight of the .45?
Is there such an animal that can hold 20 or 30 in the magazine?

That depends on the magazine that they use. I know that there is at least one manufacturer out there that uses greasgun mags to shoot. Those are 30 rounders I believe.

I'd rather have an HK USC. While I think rifles that shoot pistol calibers are kind of silly (with exception to the MP5, not really a "rifle") the USC would be my rifle of choice chamber for a pistol cartridge.
I bought the HK USC the last time I was on leave in the states. With the added laser I wouldn't hesitate to grab it in a home defense situation. .45 speer gold dots out of a 16" barrel should do the trick and this gun is crazy accurate and extremely easy to control.
Thank you for the information guys. I think I am steering away from this into more of the 5.56mm or .223 Rem neighborhood.
