Now watch everyone run out and buy .300 Win Mags. Oh wait, my bad, I remember now that everyone and their mother has one already.

    Want.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Taking the view from 10,000 feet, I find it interesting that about 60 years after the US Military moved away from the .30-06 to the .308, they jumped to the .300 Win Mag. That's roughly going from the .30-06 "minus P" to the .30-06 "plus P". Admittedly, a very simplistic view.

Note the following from Wikipedia (shown in full, Wikipedia is open-source):

"The US government purchased MK 248 MOD 1 .300 Winchester Magnum match-grade ammunition in 2009 for use in adapted M24 Sniper Weapon Systems and other .300 Winchester Magnum sniper rifles like the US Navy Mk.13s. This ammunition was developed as a .300 Winchester Magnum Match Product Improvement (PIP) and uses the 14.26 g (220 gr) Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point Boat Tail (HPBT) very-low-drag bullet fired at a nominal muzzle velocity of 869 m/s (2,850 ft/s) 15.2 m/s (50 ft/s). According to the US Navy this ammunition should increase the maximum effective range of .300 Winchester Magnum sniper rifle systems to 1,370 m (1,500 yd), decrease wind deflection on bullets in flight and use a reduced muzzle flash propellant that remains temperature stable across an operational temperature range of -32 C to 74 C (-25 F to +165 F).[6][7][8] According to JBM Ballistics[9], using the G7 ballistic coefficient provided by Bryan Litz, the Mk 248 MOD 1 .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge, when fired at its nominal muzzle velocity of 869 m/s (2,850 ft/s), should have approximately 1,286 m (1,406 yd) supersonic range under International Standard Atmosphere conditions at sea level (air density ρ)."

Most impressive is the ballistic coefficient of the bullet used - at 0.711 it's about a 75% improvement over the 150 & 168 grain bullets used for the .308 sniper rounds.

They cost around 12K. I'm sort of surprised that they didn't go with the .338 Lapua which is superior in performance.

too late. I have had one for a year and a half already
Tell me more. I'd like to build one in .338.

I heard that BlackWater got the first units.

I was wondering the same thing; why not the .338 Lapua?

Like gasmitty said; they go from .30-06 to .308 to .300 Win Mag. Seems like they're just going in a circle.

It's a whole lot of gun. I have a 300 Weatherby and I love it but it kicks like a mule. With it zeroed at 300 yards it's a tack driver. After seeing what it does to an elk, I would hate to see what it would do to the human body.
