    Sight Mod for my MAK-90

The iron sites on my MAK-90 were very narrow and, for me, difficult to acquire. Even after painting the front post with a bright orange nail polish and outlining the rear notch sight in white it was still difficult for me to line it up. With new replacement sights costing anywhere from $60 to $140 (you can spend more if you look hard enough) I knew that wasn’t happening anytime soon.

So… I dug out my trusty Black & Decker (dremel wanna-be) rotary tool and fixed it!
Using 2 ‘heavy duty’ #420 cutting wheels mounted together on the tool I got my daughter to hold the gun still on the table (got to get a vice soon) while I cut down into the existing rear sight notch. One disc fit in the existing notch with just the lightest scrapping, by using 2 discs I widened the notch just about double.

What a difference! It’s much easier to acquire the sight line up now. Now I just have to go to the local gun store and get some cold blue touch-up to apply to the newly widened rear notch and then repaint a white outline on it.

    Famous last words.
I know it wasn’t a month ago that I saw some cold blueing at Wally’s. I kept telling myself I should pick up a bottle to put up in case I should need it. Today I went to 2 Wal-Marts in my area and they told me they quit carrying it. One fellow said he didn’t know why because he sold a lot of it there. But now…

I’ll take more pics when I get that done.

You might want to try something like this (pic). It shows up good on virtually any background. If you just want to try different color front posts see #4 down in the link.

Good for you. The mod you did is one that is favored for the AK as the rear sight is narrow.
The next step in the process is to round the corners of the rear sight. Your eye will pick up the rounded sight quicker and will give you an overall clearer sight picture.

Call some of your local hardware stores, or find it on EBay.

Thanks, I'm checking out the sksman now. I also think I may remove the top of the front sight hood like the one one of you pictured.

Here is a comparative of how it looks so far.
