I spreed it out I used all these listed a little bit each: AR 5.56, 12 gauge, 22, 22mag,9mm

I found this site interesting. As for the #1 (when you can find it): "....In our opinion, this load is superior to 00 buck for selection as a tactical shotgun load. While exhibiting slightly less penetration, overall penetration is still acceptable and if all pellets strike their intended target there is potential to create approximately 77% more wound tract with the additional 7 pellets."

Good site. Thanks for the info.

Normal 55 gal barrels are less than 20 ga (.035" thick).

I've always figured 00 buck is appropriate for home defense and slugs will simply over penetrate and probably cause more unecessary damage.

Time to go aerate some barrels!

    But 1/2"? I didn't know they produced a .50cal variant...

Oh--and a quick comment on steel penetrating more than lead...it actually doesn't; it's less dense, and loses energy faster...this is why when steel was required for waterfowl, the 10 guage made a comeback in a big way, and the 3.5" 12ga supermag was born...so the shot could be pushed even faster to make up for it's rapid velocity loss.

It's also why the ultra-dense, tungsten/polymer/bismuth/composite non-lead (and non-steel!) loads have become the darlings of the waterfowling crowd.

Personally...I'd love to see a 00 Buck "Hevi-Shot" or "Black Cloud" load...
