shotgun Penetration
I was playing yesterday and at 20 yards my 00 buck doesn't all penetrate a steel burn barrel. I got 4 pellets that went through and dented the other side the rest just dented it pretty good. My slugs blow through both sides out to 70 yard (probably further couldn't test any further though) Now I am slightly conflicted about what to leave it loaded with. Now the first 2 are 00 buck and the rest slugs.

new burn barrel needed holes so the fire would burn better. I figured playing with fire and guns was a win win for me!!!

Must be an inherent trait in human males.......
Last burn barrel was holed via AR.

How much more could a shotgun be? Expectations? Well................those are a combination of what we want and what we have. There's a tool for everything, but not everyone has the tools for what they need. You make of it what you will. Lead shot or steel shot? Steel shot will go a bit more IMO. Sort of like the #2 steel shot and the pattern out of mine. Slugs? A good house gun is what you make of it. A shotgun is a shotgun no matter how you slice it. Know your limitations and your tools. Shot is for inside and slugs are for outside. A shotgun for HD in my opinion needs to be used as a spread pattern with shot. If you're going slugs, then it's as much of a one shot ordeal as a pistol even if the energy is going to simply put them down, or blow them out the side of the house. One shot is one shot.

Ah, the good old days of standing around the workers' burn barrel as they built new houses.
No, buckshot doesn't penetrate steel barrels (or cars) all that well. How or what order you mix rounds in a shottie depends on your concept of how it will be used. Inside or outside defense? Standoff or attacking aggressor?
My thought is, for inside--buckshot only; outside--slugs (for range) backed up with buck (more coverage/closer range) as the aggressor moves closer.

FWIW, I keep my Mossberg 590 loaded with six rounds of Remington Express #1 buckshot followed by three rounds of Federal low recoil 00 buck.
I found this site interesting. As for the #1 (when you can find it): "....In our opinion, this load is superior to 00 buck for selection as a tactical shotgun load. While exhibiting slightly less penetration, overall penetration is still acceptable and if all pellets strike their intended target there is potential to create approximately 77% more wound tract with the additional 7 pellets."
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Uh-oh, here we go again with the 00 buck-versus-the-rest debate!
I tend to favor the "more pellets on target" approach.
