US Army Upgrading the M24 Sniper Rifle to the new XM2010 - PICS

US Army Snipers in Afghanistan will be having their M24 Sniper rifles replaced with the new XM2010 rifle starting next month. The Army's new contract with Remington Arms calls for Remington to either manufacturer new or convert existing M24's, to make 3,600 XM2010's, which will all be chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum

Looks like quite a major upgrade to me.


In a related note, the Army also announced that they have ordered 14,000 of the the new M4A1, which has a new barrel for improved accuracy. In addition, they plan to order 65,000 kits next year to convert existing M4 carbines to the M4A1.

The main reconfiguration changes compared to 7.62x51mm NATO chambered M24 rifles are:[7]
Rechambering to .300 Winchester Magnum.
Rebarreling to a 610 mm (24 in) long, 254 mm (1 in 10 inch) twist rate (5R) hammer-forged free floating barrel.
Fitting a new chassis (stock) assembly, which maximizes the amount of physical adjustments for the sniper to provide a better user customized fit. The chassis has a folding buttstock that shortens the system for easier transport and better concealment during movement and accommodates the mounting of accessories via removable Mil Std 1913 Picatinny Rails.
Fitting a 5-round detachable box magazine.
Fitting a quick-attachable/detachable Advanced Armament Corp. sound suppressor with muzzle brake to reduce recoil and jump and audible and visible signature with an available thermal sleeve that reduces mirage effect on heated suppressors.[8]
Fitting a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm ER/T M5 Front Focal variable power telescopic sight featuring a 34 mm tube diameter, first focal plane Horus Vision grid system range estimation reticle and Bullet Drop Compensation,[9] fielded with the AN/PVS-29 Clip-on Sniper Night Sight.[10]
Applying advanced corrosion resistant coatings throughout the system.

Sooo....replace the barrel, replace the stock, add a mag, replace the optics.

How is this a conversion? It's a whole new rifle.
