A friend came over to shoot and brounght along a mini 30. I liked it. We ran through lots of el-cheapo ammo. No problems. We did not do any distance shooting, which is what I would have liked to do.

Nice that Ruger finally has factory 20-rd mags for the Mini 30. I own more Rugers than anything else, and I have a Mini 14 Ranch Rifle.

That said, I thought long and hard about what to get when I went looking for a .30-something rifle. I wanted something with more ability to penetrate cover than the 5.56. In my area, I cannot really see further than 200 yards, so I don't need a .308 or .30-06. With homes in every direction, any shot taken will need to be well aimed, so a scope was a must (this eliminated the AK and SKS from consideration). Since shots would need to be well aimed, I really didn't need a semi auto, since there would be no functional difference between a semi auto, lever, bolt or pump gun in terms of the speed of shots fired.

So, in the end I spent less than $500 for a new Marlin 336 "package" lever gun in .30-30 with a scope. Accurate, hard hitting, plenty fast enough, well balanced, easy on the checkbook, and you can top off the mag tube. I added an elastic butt cuff for more spare ammo - done.

As an aside - the terminal ballistics of the 7.62 x 39 can be iffy, especially with some of the cheaper ammo out there. See http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=310

I'm sure the Mini 30 would be a great rifle. Just wanted to give some different perspective, that's all.

    Good luck in your selection!

For the price of the Mini 30 you can get one of these ARSENAL INC and I think it's a better rifle.

I've shot a few deer with my mini 30 ranch, the 127 grain soft points drop em like bricks,in the last couple months bought a factory 20 round mag, before that had some 10 rounders that fed okay.If I need to go bigger and farther I'll grab my AR10 308

I won't get into a debate about which is the "better" rifle, but if you wish to mount a scope, the AK platform is problematic. The Ruger Mini Ranch rifles are capable of mounting scopes right out of the box.

Doan want no steenkin' AK... :-)

I've got a nice Garand for The Revolution, along with an AR carbine or two. What I had in mind for this was as a relatively inexpensive car gun. But the Mini-30 isn't so inexpensive...

The lever gun is an intriguing idea; one I've often thought about, but after some more reflection, I really don't need to saddle myself with another caliber to inventory. And the only cheap ammo these days seems to be 5.45mm AK74 stuff; Mekong Match (7.62X39) has gotten high as a cat's back.

Guess I'll stay with what I've got...

I really want one of these but if I buy another gun right now my wife might shoot me. I'll wait till summer or fall.

Actually, that's the one I was looking at. After sleeping on it, I'm thinking "So what if you have to deal with yet another caliber? Its not like you only have one or two to worry about now."

    Thanks for the prod...

Or the worst of many. That is just...a shame.
