    Shotgun Barrels

Will any damage occur if you use a rifled barrel (on a 12 ga) as a home defense gun and fire buck shot or a slug thru it, just wondering.

Rifled shotgun barrels are intended for slugs, so - no harm there.

Firing buck- or birdshot, if you do enough of it the sharp rifling will start to accumulate lead. This will happen faster with buckshot, since birdshot is usually in a plastic shot cup these days. Probably not harmful, but it will defeat the benefit of the rifling for slugs over time. Also, beyond bad-breath distances the rifling will cause holes in the center of the shot pattern.

So, bottom line is that if a fully-rifled barrel is your only choice for defense, run a few practice rounds through it to see how the shot patterns, but I wouldn't shoot more than a couple of dozen rounds of buck.

Rifled barrels are meant to be used with sabot slugs, not the foster type, the plain slugs will lead foul the barrel quickly.

Shooting bird shot through a rifled barrel will get you an amazing pattern due to the rifling spinning the cup.

Best bet is to get a cylinder bore HD type barrel if at all possible.

Check out this test The Box O' Truth #43 - Buckshot in a Rifled Shotgun Barrel - Page 1 it will give you an idea of the spreads you can expect when putting shot through a rifled barrel.
