Cool Finished the AK47! (Pic heavy)

    Ok guys,

I just posted pics of this rifle the other day.

It is a Century gun, and I just didn't really think the black plastic furniture looked 'right'

I think the wood handguards just look a bit more 'authentic' I guess

Anyway, I got a surplus sling and re-blued the hardware on it, as it was a little rough.

I got a cleaning rod for it (courtesy of my dad) and added a paracord-stock-wrap for a slightly more comfortable cheek-weld.

I got some surplus Yugo wood for it, but it came soaked in cosmoline, and very dark. I stripped the outer layer by soaking / brushing in mineral spirits, and then sanded from 180 down to 400 grit. I didn't stain them, just because I sort of like the way the light color highlights the wear and 'use' on them. I just applied 6 coats of Tru-Oil buffing with steel wool in between.

Looks good. The only thing that I can recommend is to NOT buff the Tru-Oil with steel wool. You want to get some plastic scraping pads from a hardware store. The steel wool will embed itself into your finish and possible even the wood on your stock. It will the cause seal problems or even possible rust and cause some problems with wood degradation. The plastic pads will work just fine to polish the finish.

Man, that looks good! I love the look of those hand guards. I originally wanted an all black AK, but after putting my Rommy side folding stock on, I really started to like the wood. I'm actually disappointed my wood front grip because the wood on mine looks really really nice. I like the way the wood on yours has an old, used look to it, because, well.... it probably is :)

    Whats with the brass? ;)

You should take a picture with the stock extended and the bayonet. My WASR doesn't have a bayonet lug :(

Great photos. I could take that AK either way wood or plastic but the wood is more traditional.

The wood on that rifle is awesome, reminds me of an Australian super model. Gorgeous to behold but leaves no doubt that she could kick your ass.

I'm currently on the fence about buying myself an AK, my bank accout and wife both aren't a huge fan of you right now.
