Semi auto, box magazine fed shotgun built on the Kalashnikov design ... think 12ga AK-47 ;)
(They generally come with the standard style stock but can easily be converted to standard AK furniture)

I never thought about the saiga 12ga for home defense. That would be great! But anyway the 870 or the 500 will suit your need absolutely fine. I have the 500 and have not one complaint.

That is an excellent choice. I have a couple buddies with saiga's and they love 'em. I've been thinking about getting one for myself, just for fun. I've got two preban Benelli Super 90s I used for HD.

I bought a Mossberg 500 at Wal-Mart for $200 NIB
Sold the 28" barrel at a gun show for $75
18.5" barrel for $35 ( I got a good deal, probably $50 at a show used)
Shortened forend $12 (or cut yours for free)
You could stop there and have a good HD shotty
$20 6 shot side saddle (this is why the forend was needed.
$3 neoprene shell holder on the stock
I must be forgetting something because I know I have about $260 in my shotty.
If you start with the Mossberg Maverick at Walmart for about $160 you are even more ahead. And most accessories for the 500 fit the maverick.
Mossy 500 - lifetime warranty
Maverick - 1 year warranty
Using mossberg replacement barrel and forend doesn't void the warranty.

I will be posting another thread for my choices and you all's opinions.

I recommend one of 3 models, either the remington 870, the Mossberg 500, or the winchester 1300. Stay away from "cruiser" models that only have a pistol grip but no stock, but definately get a full stock with a pistol grip. 870's are easier to find accesories for. and the 1300 is usually the cheapest.
We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

Ill second that. IMHO pistol grip only shotguns are downright pointless.
