    AR carbine vs midlength

    Can someone explain the difference between the carbine and midlength versions of the AR? I have assumptions, but figured there are a few here who could give a good description.

    The carbine length rifle has a 16" barrel with the front sight/gas block in the standard M4 position.

    The mid-length rifle has the same 16" barrel however the front sight/gas block has been moved forward 2".

    The benefits are;

    - increased sight radius for open sights
    - slightly more mild recoil impulse and reduced wear on rifle
    - more real estate for a rail system allowing you to add more accessories or even move them further out, things like an AFG grip

    Really, the only benefits to the carbine version are that it weighs slightly less (because the rails are shorter), and it is possible to mount a M-203 grenade launcher on it (doesn't really apply). But the weapon itself is the same length.

    Militaryarms did a good job of running down the pros of the midlength.

    Thanks for the info. After posting this and waking up this morning I remembered my web browser had a search option. Surprisingly this question has been asked countless times online. Although your explanation was far more to the point, and eliminated the arguments over who rifle is superior.

    Tough to find good info, when people are to busy fighting over who has the better rifle.
