    decent 12ga for around $300

I'm sure I'm going to buy a remington 870 for home defense. That will most likely stay up in my bedroom. I was also looking at a moosberg maverick 88 anyone have experience with one or any other 300 dollar 12ga? I want something for by my front door but I can't go buying 600 dollar 870's for every corner of the house.

You can often find an 870 Express HD for $400 or less.

Check out J&G in Prescott, AZ - they get police turn-ins frequently. Good, reputable firm to deal with.

If time is on your side, it's worthwhile to shop around and wait for a good deal. A Mossberg 590A1 is showing up at $400 in a basic search.

The LGS has some nice used Mossberg field guns (500s I think) for $200. I was thinking of picking one up and turning into a HD gun just for something to do. Lots of used shotguns out there that can be converted if you go that route. Of course they're cammo, but they probably shoot like a black gun ;^)

i know a local shop here has a anniversary sale every year and one of their big things is moss 500 for $250, probably selling it at cost to get people in the door. Call around to your local shops and see if anyone does anniversary sales. if you have the time to wait that is.

Remington has a rebate going right now on select guns. The 870 is one of them.

On a side note, my HD shotgun is an 870 Wingmaster that I picked up at a LGS, used for $200.

If you watch sales and look around you can find an Express HD 870 under 300 easy. Find a big gun shop with lots of stock they typically have better prices due to volume buying. I routinely see them for 269-279. Dont rule out finding a good used one on GB. They never wear out and rarely break.

You should be able to get an 870 used for around $300 in good shape.

Used shotguns are falling out of the sky for $300 or less. They are easy to find.

I have a nice Mossberg 500 in my safe with a Knox stock on it that I'd sell you for $250 + shipping.

It looks like this and is in great shape.

If you don't like Mossberg then you should be able to find an 870 in this price range without too much trouble. You just need to expand your search beyond your LGS.

At the risk of being laughed out of here, I have a Winchester '97 repro (Norinco made) that I use for home defense. I paid about $315 and the gun works extremely well! It is short, easy to use, and it is as good a "fit" for me as is an 870. Not only that, but I think it is kind of "cool" looking.

Seriously, I really like the gun and the original '97 seemed to serve people well for a long, long time.
