HD Shotgun
I just looked at a New England $149, Charles Daily $169, Remington 870 mag $319, and a Winchester ? $359 (don't remember the model) all 18 or 181/2 inch barrel home defense shotguns. I have a 870 and like it a lot, but are the cheeper guns decent guns? Are there accesories for them? I might like to add a light, pistol grip, or other mods someday, but reliability is #1. Thanks for your thoughts.

I have no experience with any of the less expensive shotguns you mentioned. I do own an 870 and have never found it to be lacking in any regard.
I will offer that, in my experience, when you buy cheap, you buy twice.

For the money; the 870, Winchester 1400 (is this the one you looked at?), or the Mo

I second the notion of another barrel or two for the 870. They are good weapons and I've got one. I've had few over the years. There are lots of accessories available for them and smiths know how to work on them, too.
NEF's, however, if you just want to do something a little different, and not very expensive, would be interesting and cool. Recently there have been more and more aftermarket toys for them.

You can never go wrong with a Mossberg.

IMO Mossberg would be the only alternative to a Remington 870. I have seen them for $149 for an 18" 500. Other than these two I'd also like to have a Benelli M4, Ithica, or Winchester 1897. The last three are more expensive.

i just bought a Mossberg Maverick( Different brand made under mossberg's name) for hunting. I figure at $137 I couldn't beat it, I mean its still a Mossy. By the way i was lookin into some different furniture for it, and found a COUNTLESS amount of accessories from folding pistol grips to side saddles, to surefire mounts. I doubt i will put anything on mine unless i get a shorter barrel, but Im not rulin that out
Guns don't kill people, Husbands that come home early kill people.

This is a slightly cheaper Mossberg 500, not a bad gun and very light, good for backpacking, but advise you get some recoil reducers as full power rounds are felt in full colour!!
I bought the 590, slightly heavier and good for bear defence. For home I would get the Mossberg 500 with 18.5" barrel and use a collasping stock and pistol grip and foreend with a light. You will be using reduced power loads so recoil is not so much of an issue.
Actually I would likely get one in a smaller gauge than 12 so my wife could use it.
