    H&R 50 S&W Caliber rifle

H&R is coming out with a break open single shot rifle with a 22" barrel, chambered in 50 S&W. Has anybody heard anything about it? It was on tv last night. It was touted as a excellent back of the seat (pickup) rifle (37") overall, and for dangerous game.

I am not aware of any pistol cartridge that is highly rated for dangerous game. Even when chambered in a rifle the bullet construction will not function like a rifle bullet would. Rifle bullets are designed for higher velocity impacts and I'm not sure how well the .50 S&W would hold up when you REALLY need it to.

The .50 S&W actually puts a lot of rifle cartridges to shame.

It ought ot do quite well in the handi rifle, but it may kick like a mule.

Considering that in a pistol, the round is suitable for stopping anything short of an 18 wheen truck, I'm not worried about it's performance in a rifle.

If you are going to drop me in bear country and a SBR in .308 with steel core ammo isn't on the list of things Mitchell can carry, I'll take a .50S&W revolver.

I think we are talking apples and oranges. When I think of "dangerous game" I think of Africa. I'm sure it would be fine for bears, although I'm not sure I'd want a single shot rifle for bear.

Gentlemen, there is no such caliber as a 50S&W; it's 500S&W.

I cast a 440 gr very hard lead bullet for my 500. Out of a 22" bbl it ought to do quite nicely for anything the planet has to offer. But if I just want to blow things up, the Hornady 350 XTP if pretty impressive. I don't know if it's legal in Jurassic Park.

    That is correct. Good catch.
