OK, so I buy this Mossberg 500A 12 ga and..

I shake the dowel out and now I've a shotgun with 8+1 capacity.

But the manual said 5+1. (2 3/4 in shells)


Yes, I've checked on the bottom of the shotgun. Definitely 500A 12 ga.

The barrel screws off....500 model

Am I missing something or did Mossberg make some new version?

Brand new? either way I imagine someone put a extended mag tube on it. It should protrude past the front of the pump forend.

Brand new. Box with screws, etc., even, from the back room.

It doesn't look different than any of the pics I've checked at Mossberg's site and even wikipedia...wait, but it does mention an extended mag.

My 500A has 8+1 extended magazine. I thought that's the only way they (the "Special Purpose" models) came. See this site:

thats how they come...I have the "cruiser" with the pistol grip and heat sheild. its a fun gun, nothing like poping 8rounds off in a row

Are you sure its 8+1? Mossberg counts the chamber with their capacities, 8 shots, take the 20" 500 for example, are 7+1. My 9 shot, 20" 590 is 8+1.

It could be your ammo. A while back I saw a thread at THR where a manufacturer made their shells just a little shorter allowing one more round to fit. The only problem was that the shorter shells were getting caught on the lifter of the issue 590s and hanging up the officers shotguns.

If your getting eight rounds in the mag tube, be sure to test your ammo. A jamming scattergun is not something you want if the S ever HTF.

Sounds like a Mossberg 500 Persuader. Great gun with 20 inch barrel and longer carrier for shells from the factory. Good choice.

I have one of these, and there was either a tag on the triggerguard or a line in the manual about removing the dowel.

I can't recall why the dowel is there. I just know that they come from the factory like that.

The dowel is a plug which will reduce the capacity to lower capacities dependent upon local regulations. E.G. in some states upland game and or waterfowl or game is limited to 3 or 4 shots, so extended mags must be "plugged back" to avoid an expensive fine from Fish & Game for excess capacity. Guess this applies to a short barrel Mossberg too......
