My 1st AR Build - DefConGun1R
I've never had an AR and have been wanting one for some time now. I've been doing some research and talking to others as a way of getting advice and reiteration. I still have a world of things to learn but I'll also say that building an AR is a great way to learn about blackguns. Not having any idea as to what I was doing, I took a friend's advice and bought a stripped receiver he told me about. I bought an Aero Precision stripped receiver for $66.00 back in August of 2010. If I'm recalling correctly, I think I gave him a few dollars for taking the time to get the receiver for me. He was having some blacksmith work being performed on a shotgun barrel and would be going to the store that had these receivers for sale. After I got the receiver home, I opened the sealed bag to inspect it. After I looked at it, I placed it back in the bag and left it on my nightstand; its been there ever since.
Last year while browsing through Bud's, the AR parts in the display case caught my eye. Although I was wanting to make some progress on my rifle, I didn't have a lot of money to put into the project. I made a happy compromise that day. I bought an ergo grip and a Magpul trigger guard. I really didn't know what specific components I wanted to get for my rifle other than the ones I picked up that day. It wasn't a major contribution to the project but it was atleast a step in the right direction. I was one step closer to completing my rifle than I was the day before, etc.
Browsing through this forum as well as some of the other forums like AR15 and M4Carbine has helped me a great deal on getting an idea as to what kind of rifle I want. At one time I thought about forgoing the project and buying an AR outright. It would be the easiest thing to do IMO but I never had the money to make a large one-time purchase. I believe, however, now that I'm getting more familiar with ARs by shopping for parts, I will have a greater idea as to what kind of AR to buy if I ever do buy a gun in a box.
Recently, I've been blessed and given an opportunity to make some extra money. In the past few weeks, I've been ordering parts in an attempt to complete my lower that's been in the making for the past 2 years. I wasn't sure about the stock I wanted to get but after getting advice on here, I decided to go with the CTR. After combing through the internet, I found a great deal on Operationparts.com. They had the CTR for $67.96, the cheapest I have seen it anywhere. I was also pleased with their selection of Daniel Defense parts and utilized this selection to acquire the pieces I needed for my stock assembly. I should also add, I was pleased with the prices they have on their Daniel Defense parts. Operation Parts appears to be very competitive with the pricing they have for the items they carry.
Here's what I got on January 28, 2012 to complete my stock:
- LMT receiver extension spring
- Magpul CTR in Flat Dark Earth
- Daniel Defense 6 position extension receiver
- Daniel Defense H Buffer
- Daniel Defense receiver end plate
- Daniel Defense Castle Nut
On January 19, 2012 I ordered a Geissele SSA trigger from G&R Tactical. I ordered it on a Sunday night and it was on my doorstep Friday night. I also got this item with free shipping. ;-)
After doing some research on Lower Part Kits (LPKs), I decided that I really wanted a Colt LPK. I ordered one last night (March 1, 2012) from Brownells. Since I didn't need the handle and trigger, I found a kit that omitted these items which saved me some money. Brownells is really expensive on their complete Colt LPKs and I would've pursued a different plan of action if that was my only route.
That is it for now. I've got other plans and items I need to get but I'll save that for future posts. I'll post the Colt LPK when I get it.
For your viewing pleasure, here is a pic of my present inventory that will one day be assembled and make up my DefConGun. Given that this is my first AR and since it is a rifle, its going to be designated my DefConGun1R. I'm really looking forward to completing it and getting some range time in on it.
