Proper Rail Length for AR Gas System

I have a 16" mid-length barrel in the works and I was wondering what length rail will properly and completely cover/protect the gas block without any of it being exposed.

From what I have seen a lot of people have 9" rails on their middy's.
Is this the minimum or would a 10" be needed to accomplish what I'm looking for.

    Thanks in advance!!

Depends on the gas block. 10 inches for small single pin lo pro GB, probably 11 for a trimmed down or double pinned long gas block.

A 9" rail will just get you to the beginning of the gas block, covering the tube and leaving room for a taller or full a-frame front sight post. 9 inches will leave your gb completely exposed.

What kind of gas block do you have or are you planning to install?

It will be a low profile block

Is it a factory-installed block included with the barrel or an individual component? Some low profile blocks like the new one from Troy are a little longer and closer in size (length-wise) to a traditional FSB--appx 1.9", while some of the smaller (shorter front-to-back) blocks like the ones produced by Daniel Defense or Vltor are half that size and can be covered by an inch or so of extra rail. So the size of the actual gas block you choose will make all the difference. An 11" will cover all mid-length gas blocks I've seen.

Here's a pic of the longer model from Troy Troy Industries Low Profile 2" Gas Block - .750 dia. Barrel #SGAS-2LP-00BT-00 -

and the shorter, more common variants Troy Black Low Profile Gas Block at MacksPW.com

And about half-way down the page there is a photo of an 11" TRX rail over a lo pro middy gas block. The poster says it leaves him about 3/4" of rail past the end of his block.

    Troy 11" versus 13"
This is what I was looking for. Thanks.
