Then again there is always the thought of using birdshot in the HD shotgun to prevent overpenetration.
Shotgun Ammo for Home Defense - Gunblast.com - YouTube
Shows Gunblast doing a segment on his prefered load of birdshot. It is not the most scientific of tests but the results seem to speak pretty loudly to me. This had really gotten me thinking this would be my load of choice from now on until... tnoutdoors9 had to chime in...12 Gauge Birdshot For Home Defense??? - YouTube

Both of these are good examples of people using tests to prove their own point and doing a convincing job of it. So now i am even more confused as to what I will load up...

To clarify what I was trying to say...
Pick what you are comfortable with and will practice with because you can't always trust the research of others. Even these two respected members of the community have come up with very different results that seem to contradict each other. I know I will be sticking with a shotgun with bird and buck shot but that is also due to the fact that I do not have an AR15, yet that is...

Something like this seems pretty ideal to me :)

AR by the bed, 30 rounds of 62 gr. soft point, best for big game, and best man stopper too.

Trust the doctors and researchers who have studied it for years: HERE or HERE.

Those jacketed soft points are the most dominate round. They are the leader for the hunter, and there is little difference between a man, and a similar size animal. I don't think the brand is so critcal, and They are all outperforming all handgun rounds, just load the one you like, it will get the job done.

When I hear something around the house I always go for my 4 inch 38 caliber smith revolver....goes bang every time without doubt and I put more trust in it then anything else I own to protect my life.

Am I the only one surprised by this?
What? Keep it with the AR-15. To minimize penetration, switch to #4 Buck for use on your 870. You are not alone. I just found out this year that 00 Buck is also penetrative despite using Federal Tactical 00 Buck as my defense load since I first bought my Mossberg 590 in December 2006.

I'll keep my winchester defender up front with 3" 000 buck, Id rather fix one wall in the house, over many walls. I'm lazy and hate fixing drywall.
