    Request for PA Shotgun info

    Ok, here it is:
I have a 12 gauge pump but it is really long, too long for hd.
Is it legal in PA to cut it down as long as the barrel length and overall length both remain within the legal limits or is completely illegal to cut it down even if both barrel and overall length remain within legal limits.

I would actually exceed the barrel length by 1 inch and overall length by an inch and a half to be absolutely certain that it was within guidelines.
Would it still be considered an illegal sawed off shotgun?

I really would like to modify it for HD but wish to remain legal.

I inherited the gun and don't hunt with it.

I feel that most here would say to you,"consult your local and state laws or a prosecuter." I personally would hate to give false info.

My feelings are that I don't believe that it would be illegal to stay above 18"bbl and IIRC, 26" OAL. Although changing to pistol grip in some states could be a no-no.

Now,someone once told me that in a couple of states it is illegal to be in posession(in your vech) of a golf club if not going to or coming from playing golf.

    Bottom yourself,check the laws. --------

Geo - don't take our word for it just to be safe but as I understand it - you can certainly shorten barrel to min 18" - remembering to ''play safe'' and maybe aim for 18 1/2 - 19".

Someone may correct me but IIRC length is taken as being from closed bolt face.

Maybe a visit to BATFE web site may assist too. I do not remember PA having any legal restriction that exceeds what BATFE would dictate.

For all you would ever want to know about HD shotgunning, join . In the forums section scroll most of the way down to the Tactical Shotgun section. Everything I know about a Tactical shotgun I learned there and of course here.

Don't do it yourself, take it to a gunsmith.

Your local gunsmith will know what length you can cut it.

Add 1/2" for CYA and have fun. Did the same thing to my first shotgun, a Winchester Ranger 120.

Instead of hacking away on your barrel, buy a 18.5 replacement barrel. These can be found with just about any reputable shooter supply company. You can even find them on ebay. Now you have two barrels, one for HD/SHTF reasons and another one for clay targets, hunting, and as a backup.

+1 to what Doc Holliday said, if that's an option for the make and model.

A second barrel is a good option , makes it easier to Accessorize too!

But to answer your question, below is what is NOT considered a
Legal Long gun for most purposes........

Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of less than 26 inches. The barrel length of a firearm shall be determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is applicable.
