Urban Setting Rifle? PLR 16?

I have been thinking about getting more prepared for a SHTF situation. I started a BUG out bag amongst other "prepping" activities. One thing I don't have is a rifle. I know the PLR 16 isn't a rifle but it shoots rifle rounds. Moreover I stay in a dense urban setting so I don't need a rifle that shoots really tight groupings at 100+ yards as if I had some huge lot of property to protect. So I have been thinking heavily about a firearm like the PLR 16. Its lighter than an AR, smaller than an AR, shoots AR rounds, and will shoot accurately as far as I will ever need. Whats not to like about it for MY situation? Anyway advice? critiques? comments? Help me out here lol. Oh I'm on a budget so if you talk about an expensive gun like a Sig 556 I need you to tell me a cheaper version like the PLR 16 for me to consider it. Thanks. Also I need realistic advice! I'm a city boy so telling me about what works in the country on a ranch won't help me lol.

I think in your defined circumstances you'd be better off with a serious centerfire handgun and a semi-auto .22 rifle, or in lieu of the .22 rifle a 12 or 20-gauge shotgun with an 18-inch barrel.

Re your "city boy" comment, you're bugging out to... where? Another city?

Whatever rifle you ultimately decide on will be up to you but, for this you get immediate kudos! :king:

Not sure where I would bug out to but if its time to go i want to be ready and I want a firearm I can carry on my waist or in a reasonable backpack/bag.
I have a handgun already.
I'm thinking the PLR 16 because I could still carry it concealed with my CCW permit since its still considered a pistol.
I don't believe every SHTF situation means zombies in the streets. Its most likely gonna be a natural disaster or infrastructure attack (power grid). That means there will still be significant law enforcement.

My serious urban sniper is a .22 LR semi-auto and scoped (edit - I should add that I anticipate being just me moving and shooting, with BFG strapped to back). Very low signature when fired, especially at night (flash and sound). Already shot thousands of rounds through it, and cheap. Can carry large volume of loaded clips, light.

I was trained to shoot face, neck and thigh when the opponent may be wearing torso protection. This is good enough at 100+ yards.

After all, huntin is huntin, and fightin is fightin, and Uncle Sam payed me to learn both.

My SHTF rifle is a totally different story. People will know when and where I shoot that :-)

For a purely urban dweller, I would be considering the Ruger 10-22 Takedown version. Large capacity magazines, and a scope and you're set for 75 - 85 yards. Maybe a little further.

If you're accurate with it and do your part, it will handle up to deer size game, plus two legged predators, all the way down to small game like squirrel and rabbit.

10-22 is one of the most ubiquitous and arguably the most reliable semi-automatic .22 long rifle platform in the world today. Taken down and stored in a small day pack, with scope and 50 round magazines... what more do you want, or need?

That coupled with a good defensive caliber, center fire handgun, and you're all set.

The PLR 16 absolutely has some true Cool Factor and (for sure) it's light weight. The real bottom line question will be...How accurately are you going to be able to hit with it?
Because...whatever weight savings you'll get w/ the PLR 16 you'll lose in added ammunition weight if Spray & Pray will be your defensive Method Of Operation. Remember that when you are bugging out...weight is weight no matter if it's part of the rifle or your extra ammo. It all humps the same.

You might want to take a look at the Saiga 223/(5.56) rifle.

And for a .22 rifle a RUGER "take down" (as mentioned above) would be a great choice...in STAINLESS maybe. Ruger makes great Stainless. :yup:

In fact...I'm having to make some serious BUG OUT weight considerations for myself right now.
Right now I'm seriously considering dumping my superlative Maxpedition bag in favor of a slightly less durable Gossamer Gear bag.
Whatever weight I can "lose" with regard to the actual bag itself...I can substitute/replace with necessary stuff.
And I'm trimming weight off of my sleep system by going with a very lightweight goose down bag inside of one of the new Breathable SOL (Survive Outdoors Longer) bivvy sacks.

I've had a PLR-16 for about 6 years and you could do a lot worse in a survival gun. Being a 5.56/.223 round it definitely has more punch to it than a .22 rimfire and is much smaller than a shotgun. It uses AR magazines and with K-T's optional fore grip, you have a rail for extras (light or laser) as well as a barrel shroud. I don't fire it that often but I've put over 1,000 rounds through mine with no malfunctions. I can also hit skeet/trap style clay targets at 100 yards all day long. FYI, I made a few "changes" to my PLR last year and made it a SBR. The hardest part was the 6 month wait for my class III stamp from the BATF. I included a few photos with some of the extras I have for it. My avatar here is a photo of it with a SU-16 C folding rifle stock and another photo here is with an SU-16 "AR" style butt stock attached.

As others have said, there are other options for you to consider, You may want to look at K-T's SUB-2000 rifle. It's cheaper than the PLR at about $400, compact and fires 9 mm or 40 S&W pistol rounds from Glock, S&W, BERETTA or SIG226 magazines. That should be more than adequate in a close range urban setting.

I have a friend that has an AR pistol with a red dot and a laser,It's not a very stable platform,ATI makes a stock for the 10/22 that not only folds to give you a shorter profile,but also has 6 positions when opened to adjust for clothes etc

I have a SU16 and like it a lot. The PLR16 is just a shorter version in as a pistol. It will be darn loud but you can carry it legally with a carry permit.
