I've had one of the standard models for years. It's definitely not a target rifle and is not intended to be. Mine has a scope on it and it does fine for my use on Coyotes and the occasional fox.

They are light weight which is nice if you're carrying it all day and I don't recall ever having a malfunction with mine.

The Mini 14 has a great reputation for durability through most conditions, reliability through extensive neglect and easy to keep in service. You see a lot of them lashed to snowmobiles in locales that would WRECK most other carbines. From purely an economic point-of-view, the trade is heavily weighed in your favor. As long as you don't expect a long-range varminter or bench rest accuracy you'll do just fine. IMHO, that rifle will ALWAYS be worth more than you'll have invested. Trade before your Buddy goes out and BUYS in new Shield.

The newer Minis (with the tapered barrel) are plenty accurate. Go for it!
The more good folks carry guns, the fewer shots the crazies can get off.
