I grew up toting a Remington Mod. 29 and truth be told I would pick the 29 if I could find one cheap and in decent shape that I could mod without feeling too bad about cutting it up. It loads like the mossy without the spring loaded lifter and ejects out the bottom too, plus it is a take-down gun.
I like the controls of the 870 because it is familiar to me and like most of my other long guns (hunting anyway). I also went with a AR style Spec-Ops stock and pistol grip. A pistol grip makes manipulating the Mossy's safety difficult. I'm also a fan of steel in a 12 ga. shotgun, but I wouldn't poo poo on anybody who chooses the 500 either.
I'll keep my freedom, my liberty, and my guns. You can keep the change.

    870 Rem

why? because I got it from a late friend for $50 bucks and it is the best shotgun I own. Mine is old and worn just like a pair of broke in shoes.

Mossberg 500. I just like the location of the safety and slide release better. I'd be perfectly happy with either though.

Mossberg 500. As a lefty, I prefer the Mossy's safety position on the tang

Remington 870 Police Magnum. Because it's a Remington 870 Police Magnum. Louis Awerbuck & Hans Vang are social shotgun gurus.

Mossberg 500 with 28" and 18.5" barrels. The Mossberg and Remington's I looked at were very similar and both highly regarded. The Remington was a little pricier so I went with the Mossberg.

I have a Remington 870 with extended magazine tube and pistol grip on both ends, and an extra, full length stock. If you are planning on shooting with a pistol grip, the safety is in the right place on the 870.

Forgot to include the "why." It was at a price I could afford at the time.

Maverick 88 20" barrel 7+1 12ga, affordable and comes pretty much how I wanted it minus sling and stock shell holder.
It's not fancy but at HD ranges and such it's prefect for me.
I know not what this "overkill" means.

Mine is a Remington 870 Magnum with all sorts of tacticool stuff added on.

I bought it because it was used and had all the extra goodies that would have cost me hundreds more to add myself. I actually prefer the Mossberg safety location but there wasn't one used for sale when I bought my 870.

Ted Williams (same as Winchester) 300 auto. I have a second barrel for it cut down to 18”, and the full size 24 inch with variable choke.
It was my fathers and was responsible for uncounted pheasants, ducks, and clay pigeons. Always 100% reliable, its only drawback for defense is the limited magazine capacity.
