Don't discount getting an AR for under that $1k mark. Get a mil-spec lower for around $100, then add a Palmetto State Armory complete upper kit for around $600. Good mil-spec rifle for around $700. Add an optic and some ammo and you're right at $1k total.

Thanks guys...was "picturing" a lever action(30-30 or 357), but the AK or SKS,especially the later sounds pretty good. As an aside,it's amazing how comfortable we've become with old Soviet weapons that they top the list, where in the "old days" a Winchester or Marlin lever and a shotgun would have been the only answers to the question!

Truck Gun for me is a .30-30 Lever action. Short, Light, can hold a lot of rounds. I love it. Not a lot of parts to snag on like bolt action rifles, etc. But then again being in a truck for me is we're out on the Ranch.

I paid 80.00 for my SKS a few years ago and only fired about 20 rounds thru it. I cleaned it and put it back in the box for a couple of years and just took it out about two months ago. I was surpised that there was no rust on it any where and it looked as good as it did when I put it up. it is a good cheap rifle that I would recommend highly. I was surpised to find that the price of these guns had went up so much.

Ha! Me too. I bought mine about 10 years ago for $75. Never fired it. Just cleaned it up and put it away. Still looks great to this day.

I like the Marlins over the Winchester . But I don't leave nothing in a vehicle for thieves to steal. Around these parts of NC if its not in a safe or on ur person it subject to get stolen.

A good used Marlin 30-30 is low cost and highly effective in that role. Next up at twice the cost is a 581 series Ruger Mini 14.
