I just bought a Stevens 320 with the 18.5" and 28" combo and it has so far been very versatile and reliable. With your higher price range tho I'd go with the 870 with a field barrel and purchase a choked short barrel for HD. The versatility of the chokes on the short barrel will allow for longer range use in a pinch without having to go to the field barrel.
+ 3 to Buckeye. Mossy 500 or a Reminton 870 with a long and a short barrel.

That much money you can get 2 mossbergs, one for clays and one for HD. Make sure that what ever you get doesn't need to stay shiny and unblemished as it sounds like you want to use them and get some range time. Nothing says "bang me up" like the range tables.

Mossberg 590. 9 rds, heat shield, 20" barrel, I got mine for $320 at Big 5. My main dislike of shotguns is capacity. Feels like that problem is solved with this one.
