I had a pistol grip on my Mossberg and didn't like it. Changed it to a stock with a pistol grip and like that much better.

Say What! Have you ever shot a shotgun at the typical distances that would be found in a house? There isn't much spread on the shot at those distances. I would say that accuracy is everything. Especially in a home defense situation.

I like pistol grips but only if they include a fixed stock or a collapsable AR style stock.

Actually they kick hand. A lot. I took mine off and went back to the standard stock.

What can you do to them? Pretty much anything you want. I love 'em.

I have a 590 that I use for home defense. Instead of side saddles and shell holding stocks, I just have a 56-shell bandolier that I can don, should the need arise. :)

The one I put on does NOT have any magnification, it is just a red dot.

It works really well at night since this gun only has a little brass bead for a front sight. I found at night I couldn't see the little bead & I had the Aimpoint from another gun, so I used it. For my use around the barns at night it works great.

I just got a Mossberg Mav. field gun........what a great value. Solid shotgun.......I dont plan on doing much, except for an 18" defensive barrel and maybe a Surefire mount.

I have the 500 with 18 inch bbl. Additions include : sidesaddle, light, laser, and I just put a new pistolgrip fixed stock by Choate. I also have a 2x power scope on it good for shooting slugs but it also has a see through scope mount which allows me to use the front bead sight for closer work.

Does anyone know where you can get magazine extensions for the moss 500?

    Not easy

It's not as easy to extend the magazine on the 500 compared to the 870. You need to replace both the barrel and the magazine tube with the 500. With the 870 all you have to do is drill 2 small holes in the mag tube and do a bit of Dremel work. Put me down as NOT a fan of pistol grip only shotguns. You can always tuck a full stock under your arm, cant put a P/G up to your shoulder to aim. If in doubt about the spread of shot inside your house, hit the range with a large target and pattern it. You might be surprised. If you're going to use one of the AR-15 or M4 style collapsable stocks, be aware that if you set it up with a shell carrier, you can't comfortably shoot from the opposite shoulder. It may make a difference depending on the fields of fire you have in your house. The regular stock with an elastic cuff is better, and a Sidesaddle or Speedfeed stock is best of all. Like ARs, I think people put too much junk on their shotguns. Extra few rounds, good. Light, good. Large Aluminum 500 safety switch, good. Those at a minimum, then start considering other stuff.

Mossberg is now making a tactical version. I picked one up a few months ago. It has a collapsible stock with a 5 round shell holder, pistol grip and a nylon strap mounted on the slide. Some tactical models also come with a heat shield, but I do not like this feature. I had one on another Mossberg Persuader model that I owned, and it was very hard to clean with the heatshield on it. I started to develop some rust specks under the heatshield as a result. The tactical model is a nice package overall.

Just bought a mossberg 500 from wal-mart a few days ago.

Great gun, I'm looking forward to getting some additions for it with this upcoming Gun Show.

    In a moment of brain-fade ......

Having owned many Mossbergs in many configurations, I needed a one-shot home defense gun that would either scare the BeeJesus out of an intruder or take him apart at the seams - 1 shot.

I married a Korean gal in '78 no bigger than a popcorn fart who wasn't afraid of guns, yet wasn't comfortable with a pump. And being home alone in Arizona on many a lonesome night, I thought maybe I had her dream gun for ease of use, devastating to be on the other end, So, in a moment of both swaggering bravado mixed with a touch of the Marquis deSade, I purchased a single shot, H&R Model 76, 10 guage and sawed it off at 18 1/4 inches. I bought 3 1/2 inch magnum shells; size 4 BBs.

The 10 gauge sawed off matched my Mossberg full choke hunting 12 gauge for distance, but the knock- down power was immense! My wife and I went out for the first time and she watched me fire this mutha, .... didn't scare her off, and as I reloaded it, I gave her the sight picture of naked looking Viking sum'***** with a broken wine bottle in one hand and his chinga-hootchie in his other, advancing on her in the confines of our bedroom. She cranked off that 'crowd pleaser', .. all 5 foot nothing of her looked like she lifted off the ground! hahahaha.

The paper target was clearly seen shredded, after the dust settled, and yet my Sweetie was none the worse for wear. She shot it 4 more times that afternoon with the only wound on her coming from the triggerguard biting her fingers as she fired this monster from the hip. Needless to say, she was sore the next two nights, but was never afraid again left alone with her 'baby' waiting in the closet if ever called upon.

I still have Mossbergs and I love 'em to death. I once tricked out a Rem 1100 with all bells and whistles only to have it taken in a home burglary. Mossbergs? ... hell yes!

I have Mossberg 500 6 shot persuader, which is a nice light gun for carrying and has a 18.5" barrel. I put the advantage arms heatshield and sights on it to improve the accuracy, however the 500 is not up to shooting 3" magnum slugs and the tube gets full of crude and is very difficult to take apart.

Just bought the 590 9-shot with ghost ring sights to replace it. I intend to put the knoxx Arms Specops stock on it to reduce recoil and have adjustable lengths of pull. Might cut the barrel down to 18.5" as I find the 20" a bit long for the bush. My gun is a bear gun for blacks and Grizzlies. A pistol grip only gun might be ok for the reduced tactical loads, but painful for the magnum loads.

I do like the placement of the controls. Also looked at a Fabarms shotgun, very nice, almost bought it, but didn't have time to relearn the controls.

This is a very Noobish question but...what is the purpose of the heat shield?

Is it just to keep you from burning your hand during rapid firing, or does it provide some sort of technical advantage during potential shotgun combat?

(Edit : Missed the last question mark...and I'm a perfectionist)
