OP, first things first. The AK 47 is chambered in 7.62X39. The .308 is 7.62X51. The two are not interchangeable. If you are looking for a gun with lots of cheap ammo the you want to stay away from .308. Ammo is too pricey.

SKS or levergun. In the real world you will be just as well served.

If you're married to the .223, I'd go with a used Mini-14. You won't find anything decent in semi-auto .308 at your price point. For affordable .30-caliber quality in a semi-auto, I say look at an SKS. The lever-gun is always worthy of consideration and a Marlin 336 is definitely not going to bust your budget, but the aforementioned are probably the best you'll find in semi-autos at your price range.

Even though the SKS is a choice I love, I am also thinking about building a really cheap AR. New Frontier LW-15 complete polymer lower for $109 shipped, and DPMS light profile complete upper for $391 shipped, comes out to $500 shipped. Thats without optics though. I would probably just put a cheap set of iron sites on to start.

Click the link (below) and ask forum member Jeff F if he will take $500.00 for the black rifle that he is selling. The worst he could do is say NO.

I like the sks over the AK.
The police are not there to protect you from crime, they are there to arrest the guy after the crime has been committed, assuming they find him. It is your responsibility to protect yourself and your family.
