I don't always have nothing to say, but when I do, I post it on Facebook.
True, but the average hunter is lucky to bust 50% with lots of wounded birds escaping. Can be used to hit a moving target with "something" (you are accepting that some pellets will miss...know your backstop)
But so much more to practice with defensive/big game loads so the budget minded would be better served with a rifle.Oh - and they cost MUCH less to buy (comparing a pump shotgun to even an inexpensive rifle)
As to acquiring small game in anything other than recreational hunting, I question the logic of carrying a round of ammo to harvest meat where the round and edible meat weigh essentially the same. But that's just me - give me a .22 pistol and snare wire.
I make a motion that this thread be named "most full of shotgun misinformation"
Some of the minds are made up.
Don't try and confuse things with the facts.

Hio Nedrgr: 9 m/m=- .356 oo buckshot is .33, ooo is .36. picky picky, no hot rolls with yer coffee my friend. sides some will be deformed to over .356 etc., (squirming) however I must grudgingly say that you sre more correct than I am at this point, which in any event is negligible in SD

p.s. 000 works nicely in a Colt Navy .36 cap and ball pistol.
Is a shotgun useless ??? no not at all. with any load. if loaded with a slug, aim center mass, buckshot the same or legs and shoulder. bird shot straight to the face, one of thoughs baby's will catch an eye.
Catching the scent of mythical shotgun spreads... Peeewwww

Not being picky, your comparison of a shotgun pellet to a 9mm bullet was totally off base. The difference in projectile is considerable as to size, mass, construction, materials, and physical reaction to encountering flesh (expansion + designed sharp edges). Also, any deformation of spherical pellets in one direction to over .357 will necessarily result in deformation in another direction to less than .357 and will impede penetration in an already mass handicapped projectile. If you want to compare the individual pellets of buckshot, the most suitable pistol cartridge would probably be the .32 S&W.
Seriously, where do you get this stuff?
A shotgun is still as formidable as it ever was. I would rather deploy a rifle for HD/SD, but if a shotgun is what is handy, I will not feel undergunned, unless the bad guy is at a distance beyond the shotgun's range, which would, realistically, be a very rare event. My actual, default HD/SD long gun is my personally-owned duty 870P, with a Vang-comped barrel. After I retire, a Mini-14 looks to be the likely successor, but the shotgun will still be kept around.
Let me redeem myself !! I learned to be a little more serius when replying on here , u guys are more formal, intelect, diplomatic, than what im use to hangin with, and thats cool !!! I sometimes or alot of times like to add lib (exadurate) a little especially about guns, we do it all the time here ar home with friends, havent you guys seen dirty harry, lol. Anyways my oppinion on the shot gun is I believe, a shotgun will do more damage at close proximity(inside ur home) to a human body than any other gun when using 00 buck or bird shots with a single pull of the trigger thats my beliefs. A shotgun is NOT useless !!!!!!!....
I hope i earned another star under my name on this one lol.
