the venerable Winchester 1897 trench shotgun

My dad\'s self-Christmas present this year was a WWI Winchester model 97 trench shotgun.

He saw in the Shotgun News from the vendor Ivanhoe. They sold out like hotcakes before he called in his order, but one customer couldn\'t come up with the money, so Ivanhoe called dad back to say dad got the last one.

These guns were not issued and sold from the Army to the Richmond, VA PD. The buttstock is stamped \"TRAF.\"

It came complete with bayonet (sorry, I don\'t have pics yet).

The Germans were so scared of the Model 97 that they tried to get it outlawed.

    Fun shootin\'.

Just remember to keep your fingers out of the way...

Yeah, like that was gonna work :P

Those are wicked looking shotguns and a bayonet would really make it look like something to avoid....

Betty, If you don\'t mind how much did it cost. My accountant has one his father gave him and I\'ve been try to get him to sell it but coming up with a price is tough.

From the same guys in the same war who first used poison war gases. Double standards aren\'t just in Berkely!
Very nice, Betty! Nothing like an old trench broom!

    Hi nighthawk,

It\'s really going to depend on the condition, serial number, etc. The actual trench ones I believe are worth more - dad also had a \"civilian\" (I don\'t know what else to call it) model 97. There\'s the shotgunworld.com forums that has an ID & pricing section that could help your accountant.

I have a Norinco Copy because I cannot afford the real deal. The \'97\'s are my favorite of the trench guns and I\'ve wanted one for ever. Congrats on the nice purchase.
