Any piston gun will be a little front heavy. Troy, Ruger, Colt are all good just to name a few. With a budget of $1500 I would get the Colt, ammo and mags then select the rail system and accessories you want.
Now to cloud the issue even more look at the SIG 556. It is a piston gun, with AK reliability and AR controls, takes standard mags and different models have full rail systems, folding and collapsable stocks.

To me, they're very close in the felt recoil. With IO's rails you can get the same optics and attachments as the M-4 design.
