Best 44 or 357 mag Defensive Round for Rifles

What would be the best round or best type of defensive ammo for a 44 or 357 mag rifle? I've heard that a lot of the best hollow points for handguns will dissentegrate at rifle velocities.

I'd look real hard at Hornady LeveRevolution. It's designed for rifles, and is some very high performance ammo.

I've read so many different posts and been to so many forums that I can remember exactly. That's one reason I came here to pose the question directly.

I just shoot .357 158 grain LSWC through my Rossi Puma. I have never heard or read about those rumors you mention. But here is some interesting info from Buffalo Bore Ammo. Check out the chart at the bottom concerning rifle shot .357. https://www.buffalobore.com/index.ph...t_detail&p=102

Any full-powered ammunition, well directed, will prove effective when fired from a .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum rifle.

For that matter a lot lighter loadings would still do the big job.

    In a Marlin 1894 .44mag lever-action with 16in bbl, I've found a couple to be fairly effective:

Stout, tough kick, but effective on target. Nearly double the energy delivered as compared to "normal" .44mag rounds.

If you've got a .44mag rifle that'll handle 300gr+ bullets, both of these makers have heavier loads, including hard cast bullets. For dangerous game, many report excellent performance with such loads.

In an 8" barrel revolver the 300 grain 44mag stuff will penetrate both shoulders on fairly large hogs. Probably even more from a carbine. For home defense I'd do some experimenting with 200 grain gold dot loads or something similar and try to limit penetration to something along the lines of 12-14". That would create a huge energy dump into any bad guys.

I love the heavy loads for hunting! Amazing what they can do. Not sure how good or bad they'd do for defense, but I would be willing to bet they won't stop in the bad guy...or within the walls of some houses for that matter.

The rounds CCW listed above are great rounds if you don't roll your own.
