Goodbye 870 - Hello 500
I've had my 870 for a little while and although it was a good gun, I never quite adjusted to it. As a lefty, I found the stock would do a number on my face and the safety wasn't the best for me. Been thinking about a Mossberg 930 for a while and went to look at some Saturday, ended up coming home with a Mossberg 500 after all was said and done, the 930 just didn't fit right, the 500 popped right in place and the bead was on target immediately.
I got the Field & Defense combo at Cabelas which replaced what i had in the 870.
So far I really like it and all the functions feel natural, I field stripped it, wiped everything down with CLP and put it back together - all that's left is to shoot it!
I think I'll keep it loaded with Federal 00 Buck with Flight Control wads, but do have the Winchester PDX1 loads for it too, we'll see.
Here it is with the 20" breech barrel, it also came with a 28" ribbed and ported barrel with center bead.

Nice. I've never had any issue with the 870, but to each his own and all that.
I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it.

I have been stocking up on 500's. Love them and have several that have never been fired.

I'm a right handed person who shoots left handed. You are right about the downsides for a lefty.
Mossberg 500, whatever its other merits or demerits has a much better situated safety for left handed shooting.

I also shoot totally ambidextrously! Pistol, long arm or shotgun. Love the 500 for the feel. I have several variations, however the one I live with at home is a pistol grip.... yada, yada, high intesity LED light... yada yada... and load it for Bear! Word.

Congrats on finding something that works for you. ;-)
There's a tactical Mossy at Wal-Mart that I've had my eye on lately.
I hope you enjoy your new addition.

I just wanted to add... for the cost of an 870 (when on special mark downs - often), or higher comp priced Remmington, other... you can go 'on line' for very cheap, and build what you want with inexpenisve extras... to add to the 500. It is a perfected pump weapon system.
I wait for them to go on sale $$ and always buy the deal with the ribbed hunting barrel with the riot gun barrel... Can't beat that deal.
With a hand grinder and some G-2 and some after market (innexpensive parts), all of my inner circle 'family and friends' are proficient with the same basic weapon.
However, I do now have several ribbed hunting barrels that I'm not quite sure what to do with, but hang on to.

I've been looking at the Mossy, myself. Does anyone else make a top mounted safety? Right now I am getting by with my CAS Stoeger side-by-side, since it, too, has the top mounted safety.
Thunder71, I had the same issue with my 870, which I got rid of several years ago.

Browning BPS comes to mind.

Best of luck with the new shotgun. I have a 500A Persuader, and I'm sure you're going to be completely happy with it. I also prefer the location of the controls on the Mossberg over the Remington; excellent design.
