People all have a different idea of what is needed for a survival situation. Some people believe in a shtf situation they need quality hunting firearms. For a survival situation I personally don't agree.
Yes, a person should have hunting firearms, but if a person thinks they are going to run out and start hunting in a shtf time, they might be sorely surprised to find that everybody and their dog has the same exact idea & can not survive off of what is available (supply and demand...)
As I mentioned, everybody has a different idea of what the right answer is for a survival situation. I think that a person should be very well stocked on food supplies (how much is up to you); and their weapon of choice should be for defensive purposes against looters and thieves that are possibly armed.
Some people will benefit from the hunting type of survival, and I don't discard the idea. I think a person should be prepared to hunt if need be, but have a surplus of supplies for a shtf situation.
Anyways, I'm rambling... I do enjoy talking about topics like this.
IMO, choose a rifle for defensive purposes first, and then look to see what would work well for hunting. IMHO a shotgun should be around, as well as a semi auto rifle.

After further thought, I find myself agreeing with jercamp45. An SKS is dependable, affordable, and ammo is plentiful and relatively cheap. If I could only have one rifle, and didn't want to spend a lot, SKS would definately be the choice.
When you've got 'em by the balls, their hearts & minds will follow. Semper Fi.

Narrowed Down the List...
An Armalite AR15 (A4) (flat top) with an EO Tech Hologram Sight has caught my eye. I am now searching the I-net and several local gun shops to find the best price...
I think that this is going to fill the defensive needs...but I'm still open for comments or suggestions.
