SKS disassembly - what exactly is this?

Okay, I want to learn my SKS inside and out, having never owned one before. I've been looking at some YouTube videos on disassembly and cleaning, but none of them seem to have this part. It prevents the main bolt from being removed by popping the pin out.

So what's the deal? Scope mount? Alien Communication device? Inquiring minds need to know.....

Aren't those SK's throw away guns? When they get too dirty to shoot, you just throw it away and get another?

Not at current prices, they're not.

    Any serious answers?

Sorry, Springer, no experience with SKS, just Levers & Bolts.

I remember walking into Gun Shops and there was always a crate of SKS near the door. Of course, nowadays, walking into a Gun Shop is like walking into a grocery store, in the South, when they have predicted snow.

    I've never seen that before.
My SKS has a scope mount that has the mount welded onto a new bolt cover, whereas you take the original out, and put the new on.Kind of like this one here.
PolyTech SKS Scope Set w/ RED STAR mount rings 762 : AK47 Parts at GunBroker.com

It does look like a type of scope setup of some kind though.
I would get it to a gunsmith to have him survey what you have there,

Good luck, and maybe you could just get a new bolt cover, or one like I gave you a link for if you wanted a scope mount for it, instead of what you have.

Thanks. It's no biggie. I'm sure someone here has seen it before.

Yes, I believe it is for a scope mount. If I recall, haven't looked at my SKS in a couple of years, but that is a replacement reciever top with the holes for a plate that rises up to mount the scope. They suck basically, because each time you disassemble the gun you have to rezero the scope due to the 4 bolts that hold it tight to the lower receiver. Seems they never get back in the exact same spot.

I tried that mount type, and quickly switched back to the orginal receiver cover and open sights. I think they make some better scope mounts than the type that on your SKS.

Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Yep, it's a scope mount modification to the bolt cover. Go look on GunBroker or at Numrich Arms for a stock replacement - shouldn't be too hard to find, or expensive.

And if you want to improve on the crude SKS sights, go see what Tech Sights has to offer.

Thanks, all. I removed the screws and it became like a standard bolt cover.

SKS disassembly - what exactly is this?

Def for a scope. I'm currently doing a remodel on my sks. Mine had this type of scope mount on it. Throw it away. It's junk. Get one off brownells with a picany style base. They come big to accommodate all sks models so u prob will have to do some filing/fit checking/filling to get it to fit right and snug.
