Help picking a scope for ruger 10/22
I just picked up a Ruger 10/22 and I want to get some kind of optics for it. I want something that WILL fit in the Ruger backpack/case that the takedown comes with WITHOUT having to remove the scope. I also do not want to spend more than $50 dollars since it's just a plinker.
It appears that I would need a scope that is less than 11 inches long and able to be mounted rearward as much as possible. A large diameter long front on the scope would stick out making the reciever and scope too long for the case. Also I have seen a couple of post where the scope diameter prevented the barrel/foregrip from being turmed to disassemble the gun.
I am also wondering if a red dot sight might be the way to go but I don't have any real experience with them. I have only shot one gun that had one, a 464 Casull handgun. My questions on the red dot are, are they useable at ranges over 50 yards? As far as I know they are not magnifing scopes, and my eyesight is such that I really can't see bullseyes at 100 yards without magnification.
Are red dots better at picking up target acquisition ?
Here are a few scopes I have found that I am considering:
Aim Sports 4X30 rubber coated, short body.
Aim Sports 4x30mm Rubber Armor Scope - 1104840, Scopes at Sportsman's Guide
NcStar 1 X 45 red dot
1x45 T-Style Red Dot Sight - 618098, Red Dot Scope at Sportsman's Guide
Aim Sports 4 X32 range finding reticle
Aim Sports 4x32 Mm Rangefinding Reticle Scope, Matte Black - 811243, Scopes at Sportsman's Guide
Barska 2.5 X 25mm short body
2.5x20 Contour Scope - 859859, Scopes at Sportsman's Guide
Simmons 4 X 32 but I am afraid it may be to long to fit in ruger case.
Simmons 22 Mag Rimfire Truplex Reticle Scope - 355632, Scopes at Sportsman's Guide

Anybody else? I just happened to pick up a takedown and I'm also interested.
Interested in the red dot but, same as OP, thinking something that magnifies would be better for over 50 yards.

Red dot sights will make you instantly cooler, sexier, and able to make every shot you see in all the movies. All the cool kids have them.
But seriously, red dots are good for close, fast, multiple target acquisition. I prefer standard crosshairs for precise rifle shooting.
