AR= Armalite Rifle
I think there is a general consensus in the gun community that Assault Rifle = Military spec rifle = automatic, which is of course already banned for the most part, which drives me nuts when listing to the anti-gun banter. They have no clue what they are talking about. You wanna have a serious discussion get the terminology right sheeps.

don't call them Assault Rifles!
saying my Arsenal SGL 21 is an AK47 is like saying my PSA carbine is a M4. sure they look pretty much the same but they lack some pretty significant components of their predecessors. the distinction based on lineage (AR/AK) works though and sugarcoating it is a bad idea I think. the rifles were designed to kill people. that's why many of us own them. the right to own a firearm designed to kill people is what the second amendment is all about. call it what it is and debate the reality and the necessity of the amendment.
that kind of distinction and terminology is irrelevant to the anti crowd and media though. for example, how many times this week has BO referred to hi capacity clips? we should tell our congressmen that they should agree to a ban on all clips over 10 rounds. you'd think one of his advisors would explain the difference between magazines and clips to him.

"Sport utility rifles" is my preferred name for them. They're as common as spent .22 brass on the ranges I visit, and they are useful for a wide variety of shooting applications - recreational shooting, competition, hunting, agricultural pest management, law enforcement and personal/home defense.

I've actually been thinking of getting a black cat and calling him AC, for Assault Cat. That will make him seem more menacing to would-be prowlers and home invaders. Assault Cat, keeping the perimeter safe since 2013.

The Sigs being made in Germany, they should be called "Volksrifle". Then perhaps they would take on an affectionate cult following much like the peoples' car.

OK, "Assault Weapon" is best described as a political invention.
From now on I am calling my scary black rifles, "Fluffy Bunny Rifles".

The JPFO folks might take a dim view of that...
This goes back a few years (like 30), but a friend of mine was dating a Jewish girl for a while and it was time to meet the parents. My friend drove a Beetle back then (you can relate!). So on the given night he drives up to the girl's house, introductions were made, and the dad looks at the car, then looks at my friend, and says in a thick German accent, "Zo - you drive a Nazi car, eh?" Things didn't get any better after that!

I will call my rifles anything I darn well please, including assault weapon, for I will not pander to the anti crowd by referring to them as sporting rifle, modern sporting rifle or some other bunny lovin' tree hugger save the children type name. Because at the end of the day, any rifle can be an assault rifle and any rifle can be a modern sporting rifle. What we call them is of no importance to the gun grabbers, they want us to be disarmed, period.
After they are done coming after the assault weapons, they will look for a tragedy to exploit to come after the bolt action hunting rifles, aka sniper rifles with high powered scopes designed for killing babies and single mothers from long distances. Know it.
Listing the guns you own in your signature doesn't impress me or anyone else. Listing the amount of rounds downrange this year and training classes you've attended might though.
