I have my sling connected to the stock, looped over my right shoulder, around my back, and under my left arm connected to the rail, right where the rail meets the receiver.
You really should let you gun wear the sling.
How you use the gun with a sling depends on what you are doing and circumstances. It is there to make carrying and using the gun more efficient, so use it however it is most comfortable and useful for you. Experiment, unless you are in a parade there is no wrong way.

I'm eccentric in that my AR 15 is equipped with a M1907 sling and it gives perfect satisfaction.

Everyone walks, leans, and swaggers different. There might be a text-book starting point. But, you have to find out what is comfortable and that works for you, personally.
It might be awkward for me, but it works great for you.
