    S&W M&P AR15 - my latest experience with an AR....hmmm...

With AR prices gone crazy as of late, when I saw a S&W M&P 15 for $1499, I pondered over it and did some trading and took it home. I think the price is a bit high; I don't think this is a $999 gun, but it's still a few hundred high. The gunshop claims this was not an inflated price. I know the owner personally and I think he was honest about it.

As you can see, it has a collapsible stock, folding rear sight, and quad rail forend - fixed front sight, and it came with one Magpul 30 round Pmag. And this will probably get you - I bought 3 more 30 round Magpul Pmags without the windows for $19.95 ea. And then the other day, I bought 2 more Pmags with windows for $21.95!

As seen in the pic, I've already replaced the stock with a Magpul friction lock and the pistol grip with a Magpul MIAD PG. I really don't like the stock AR pistol grips.

I have an Armalite AR15 carbine that I've had many, many years, but thought it was time to update, and that was one thing that lead to my decision to buy - well and the current uncertain political climate.

I noticed the forend was a bit loose, both back and forth and rotation. Both are very slight, but still you feel it. I called S&W and they immediately said they would send me a shipping label to return it for inspection and repair. While that's excellent customer service, it would have been even better if the problem hadn't been there in the first place.

Here's one of my setups for it - this is an Aimpoint RDS in front of an AN/PVS-14 night vision device. There's also a Surefire X300 weapon light on 'this' side and a Lasermax UniMax infrared laser on the bottom handguard rail.

A Streamlight TLR-1 infrared illuminator - essentially an invisible weapon light, could easily be added too - it looks just like a TLR-1 without all the Streamlight logo:

I thought that was strange, but it does appear to be a Streamlight - here's the only marking on it:

And does it ever work! The beam is typical Streamlight - bright center and lighter spill. But the 'spot' would easily reach 200 yds with the PVS-14 night vision monocular.

I thought shooting it (without the night vision) was a bit of a let down. It's a fine gun, I'm just used to shotguns and when I shot it, I kept waiting for it to recoil and a big hole to appear in the target . Actually it was fun to shoot - I was just really amazed at how acclimated I have become to shotguns. The AR seemed to have no recoil at all.

Nice pickup and well thought out additions to the gun. I've recently tried the BCM Gunfighter grips and ditched all MOE grips in favor of them. My stocks are all on pos 2 (I think) so for my height and wingspan that's pretty choked up. The BCM grip helps to combat wrist fatigue with its relaxed grip angle.

That's nice S&W offered to fix the rail for you. What make is it? If you have the extra money at some point I'd recommend a cutout. Daniel Defense and Centurion both make carbine FSB cutouts that are solid as hell and would give you a lot more room for mounting lights, NVG, etc.

Examples of carbine cutouts with x300-type light placement at 12 o'clock

ETA: To give you more flexibility with the AN/PVS-14, a LaRue LT129 cantilever mount for the Aimpoint might help you out...

I use the DD Omega X 12.0 FSP rail and it's very nice. My factory Troy rail on my M&P15 was also loose, but this was after I installed a flip-up sight/gas block. So my fault, actually. I actually ended up breaking it (the rail), which lead to my purchase of the DD rail.

The angle of the BCM grips look really nice. I just like the rubbery coating of my MOE + grip that I use.

Nice pickup! There are actually some EBRs in the LGSs now; the prices are a little high but getting better. I'm really wanting to pick up a Sig 516 but the M&P looks pretty nice, too.

$1500 isn't a terrible price for the M&P15x. The troy quad rail forend makes it worth it for me. Here's mine with a couple upgrades:

Going to upgrade the Bushnell TRS-25 to an Aimpoint PRO in a couple of weeks.

Well, it didn't seem like that bad of a price; S&W lists it for $1379 so normally it would retail for a little less. But I'm happy with the deal. I priced a Ruger AR for $2000 and a Colt for $3000.

I like how close the optics are mounted. I can mount my NV closer to the Aimpoint, but then I can't get the rear lens cover to flip up.

I like the Aimpoint Pro but it costs about $400. I realize it's the 'best', but I have a hard time spending $400 for one sight when a TR-25 does a really good job for $80. I'm not the only one that thinks so either. Check out NutNFancy's take on the TR-25:

    Just something to consider.

My Primary Arms magnifier is on an ADM swivel mount; so I can swivel it aside to remove the optic covers. I got the TRS-25 after watching nutnfancy's video, but I want to use this AR15 for home defense so I like the super long battery life of the Aimpoints so I can have it permanently on. After getting the Aimpoint, going to ditch the bipod and get a decent light, most likely an Inforce WML.
