    Benelli versus Mossberg

I've been thinking of saving for a home defense shotgun...I'm not a hunter and don't have much shotgun experience, but there were a couple that caught my eye. I'd been quite keen on the idea of the Mossberg 590 for some time now, with some sort of folding or pistol grip stock. However, recently, I saw the Benelli M4...I was in love for about ten minutes til I saw the price tag. Then I saw the Benelli M2, and the price tag still was a bit too high. But I looked at the Benelli Super Nova Tactical, which is another pump action, and the price was fairly equivalent.

I know Mossbergs (as well as the Rem 870) are the classic choices...can anyone compare the Mossy 590 to the pump action Benelli tacticals? What about quality? I don't know much about Benellis in general. I was rather smitten by the M2, though. So I'm very conflicted...the old standby Mossberg, the pumpaction Benelli, or keep saving and get the semi-auto M2 Tactical?

I'm getting a Benelli Nova Tactical (not Super Tactical) myself.

They are supposed to be excellent shotguns.

Mad Ogre has a great review of them: http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/be...al_purpose.htm

I kind of expected a flood of Mossberg votes given their general prevalence...to be honest I was definitely leaning towards the Benelli. We'll see (got to save up first)! Thanks for the review link, too!

....it's still early in the day; I'm sure lots of Mossberg fans (I'm one too, but I already have a Remingon 870, but I always wanted a Nova and the price is right for this one) will weigh in later today.

Think about what accessories (if any) you might want to add later. Like side saddles, sling mounts, and see how they compare in price.

It's cheaper to hotrod a Mustang than it is a Ferrari.

Benelli vs Mossberg ???? Come on,you can make the question harder than that.

    Benelli !!!

Try to find a used M1 Super 90 in (NRA) excellent to very good condition. Grab up a Brownell's catalog and order 25-35(~) bucks worth of replacement parts and violla(wah-lah) you got a brand new weapon. A weapon that you can be proud of. Nobodys proud of their Mossberg.

    (just kiddin') I own two and like 'em both,but they're just not a B E N E L L I -----

That may be true, but the Ferrari will still kick the crap out of the Mustang any day of the week, and look good doing it! Check out my M2. I can't say enough good things about it.

I've fired a Nova in 20 guage. It liked it OK but I'll stick with my 870. I did like the mag cutoff button. I think other pump makers should start equiping theirs with mag cuttoffs

I've got an M3 Super 90...waited a few years to get it and found one used for $500....best HD shotgun I've owned.

I use it also for skeet....as well as my Benelli Nova (pump)

Maybe I've got prices all skewed. From what I saw on ImpactGuns, the Benelli Super Nova Tactical was $389, with pistol grip stock and ghost ring sights. The Mossberg 590 with the ghost ring sights is $395. So really there isn't a price difference between those two pump-action shotguns. And to be honest, while I was planning to extensively mod the Mossberg (folder stock, heat shield), the only mods I'd want to do on the Benelli is perhaps some sort of tactical light attachment, eventually.

I'm leaning towards the Ferrari, still!

I know the Benelli Nova Tactical's possible "add-on's" include a two-shot mag extender, ghost ring (GR) sights, "sidesaddle," mercury recoil reducer and bracket, and scope mount...that's it. What sort of stuff does the Super Nova add, besides a pistol grip stock and GR sights?

The Nova Tactical I'm getting is LNIB, with GR sights and the two-round extender for $350 shipped. Not a bad price.

Yeah, those of us privilaged few that know the secret, can position an extra round on top of the loading gate for even more firepower.
