How do I remove the buttstock on the 870? It's the synthetic stock. I got the pad off and then I can see something that kind of looks like a big head with a slot for a flatthead except that it does not want to turn. Am I missing something obvious?

You can use a long screwdriver to remove the stock screw. But if it slips, it can damage the screw head and make it harder to remove. Brownells makes a wrench to remove those stocks.
Use a 3/8ths drive ratchett,long extension,and a 1/2 inch socket, next time. -----
why ratchet with a 1/2" socket if it's a screwdriver head?????
Anyways, what the problem turned out to be was the the original threads were buggered up from factory and in order to install my spec ops stock I had to run a tap through the to clean them up. Must say that it was dissapointing to see such poor worksmanship!
The Rems and Moss' that I have delt with have had a 1/2" socket head with a screwdriver slot cut accross it.-------
